Avenues of conifers, arches adorned with creeping roses, the use of seating benches, stone ponds and pebbles are dominant features.

The following are some plants used abundantly, camellias, brunfelisia, azaleas, hydrangeas, gardenias, Canterbury bells, evening primroses, foxgloves, snapdragons, sweet peas, delphiniums, daffodils, narcissus, larkspurs, hollyhocks, poppies, daisies, salvia and irises.

Formal Gardens: - are typically structured informal gardens.

These gardens are often planted out with tall, spreading trees that normally flower in a variety of soft colours.
Shrubs are planted in a manner to provide the intermediate level between the tall trees and the flowering annuals and perennials.
The shrubs are often not pruned into a topiaried feature unless a focal point is being attempted.
The common yew is often used for hedges, which occasionally incorporate some form of topiary.  Flowering annuals are used in abundance to provide a wide range of heights and colours and are typically planted randomly to create a wild effect.
